Bi-annual Blog update

OK lets face I really have nothing to say, and when I say it it is not nearly so clever and interesting as when you two say nothing. I just started this thing so I could keep up with what Gen and Lizard post.
Both of you are very interesting, thanks. I look forward to reading your doings, and I have learned interesting bits
about various er even some real world things.

Ouch - just did a little research and this is apparently just for you Lizard, Gen for some completely inexplicable reason has given up her subscription to this tombstone er page.

So I am just finishing up teaching my second Linux+ class at the stridecenter, and will be starting my second run at teaching Network+ to these poor bastards. Poor because now for something like eleven weeks they will need to listen to me prate on and on about the joys of tcp/ip and tcpdump. heh.

So I just finished my notes for my opening lecture Monday night, you know the part I say prior to the actual content they need to know, and I 'thought' to myself .... Hey you could reuse this prose by posting it to your B L O G, its at least as interesting as some of the links to personality quizzes that Lizard posts right? right? Anyway

1)We do not have enough time to adequately cover all the material in the book.
2)The plan is to have 2 days of lecture each week and 1 day of lab.
3)Lectures will cover what I consider to be the most important points from a practical standpoint
4)I will not cover things you need to memorize for the test
5)I will cover things you need to learn to keep a job and get promoted.
6)You will be cramming the crap you need to memorize for the test on your own
7)There will be a test every Monday
8)Weekends are for reading, find the time to get it done.
9)I will be holding extra Lab Days on Saturdays, those of you who can not keep a B average
on your tests will be expected to attend, everyone else is invited too.

When you are finished with this class if I have done my job correctly you will have or know the following:

1.The names of lots of various things that relate to networking.
2.Microsoft sucks
3.A solid working _and_ theoretical understanding of the tcp/ip suite of protocols
4.A vague understanding of trouble shooting techniques for tcp/ip
5.The ability to teach yourself things you don't know.

BTW I just noticed I had some GIANT jpeg files on this page that I trimmed down, sorry about the bandwidth.
So th Linux class has been much better this the second time through, started with nine students and 11 weeks later I still have seven. Classes are six hours on Saturdays. I write tests and develop labs and every durn thing. It turns out I am actually a good teacher, the cranky kind ... but most people seem to be catching on and my tires were only slashed the one time.

In additional remodel bragging I recently finished my panty, you may recall the largish cabinet we constructed and put next to the refrigerator, well we put some sliding glass doors in front of them and built an nice butcher block top cabinet to replace the stainless steel table. check out the movie here.

Spent the weekend finishing off a cabinet, essentially so I could get rid of it. It was supposed to be for Roxanne's mom, but she died before I could finish it. Then it sat for over a year while I debated about what to do with it. It is not a bad piece, it has an adjustable shelf that slide out like a drawer. It would have had two of them, but I kept the drawer runners for myself since I am just giving the piece away to a kid that does day labour for me.

Here is the front

and with the drawer opened

I also started construction of a new piece for the pantry, after five hours or so of negotiations Roxanne and I have finally signed an MOU, construction began today. There was _much rejoicing_. I am hoping to have that room completely done by the end of the year.

Roxanne is getting ready to go on a cross country cycle trip with a group. She will be taking Diesel the Chihuahua she brought back from her last road trip .... maybe I can get her to leave the little monster out there, you know Circle of Life and all......

Oooh I added "content"

OK,  yup I am the worlds worst blogger.  I read Lizards and Gens every time they update ....
but I really have nothing nearly as interesting to say. Hmm well on second thought some of those entries you guys make are very prosaic.  But you say _many_ of them in very interesting ways.  I love Lizards movied reviews.

Anyway I have been working diligently on the remodel of the house.  Here are three quicktime slide shows covering four projects:

I finish some furniture, oh but the pantry is by no means done ......

Ok as both of you know, I saw Ian ( Lizard ) a couple of weeks ago. I had been meaning to make a couple of comments. First it was good to see him again, I never spent enough time with him when he was here. This of course fly's in the face of the fact that any time with him is PLENTY. Hmmm conflicted or wryly teasing? You be the judge. Probably should have joined the game they were playing, I was mainly interested in a chat so .... well whatever.

Ian had a goatee ... Hold on here, ALARM!
"Is he wearing black leather?"
"a bare midriff?"
"Is he over enunciating all of the consonants in each word?"
no
no
no

PHEW! not an Evil Lizard from a parallel universe. So this means we don't have to kill him to save the future, honestly that kept the evening from becoming uncomfortable.

Update to man(3) pages
I have been training for the last nine months in order to, well we will call it compete but only to be polite to me, compete in a some riathelons this summer with Roxanne. Usually triathelons are a very civilized and enjoyable event for me. We get up early I help her load her bike, we drive to the course, set up her transistion area, then we nap. She runs and swims and bikesp; I read, drink tea, hand her towels and maybe hand her the iPod. So last week we went on a 10k run up and down some ridge line behind Bolinas called Wild Boar Run. Yup I finished dead last in my age bracket, but well I finished, then they gave banana nut bread! I guess there easier ways to get bread, but none that make Roxanne as happy.
So June will see me in a Tri For Fun yes really FUN, that's what these sadists call this stuff. Not a doughnut or Unix terminal in sight and they call it fun. Wheeeeeee!

Cool things happening at work:
Cisco boot camp in September
moved company firewalls off single redhat box to pair of OpenBSD machines running in a failover cluster.
Put a pair of VPN servers also running in a cluster also running OpenBSD up.

Worked on the shop more this weekend, here is some evidence ....

Obligatory pet in photo photo .Oscar sits in now caster mounted cabinet base.

used this jig and router to dovetail these blanks.

Which makes these corners,

Which gave me this stack of drawers.

Heh, not bad for an afternoon's work.
